Bakery Technician

What do you like to do in your spare time

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking and experimenting with new recipes, and keeping active. I really enjoy travelling with my wife and our three dogs, exploring new places together and spending time outdoors.

Tell us about your journey in Whitworth Bros.

I have been with Whitworth Bros for over six years. Before joining Whitworth, I worked in a warehouse for another company, and moving here was a great decision that gave me the opportunity to learn new skills and grow professionally. Since starting at Whitworth, my role has developed significantly. I began with core technical bakery tasks and test baking, and over time I became more involved in New Product Development, including pizza projects involving enzymes and fava bean. I have taken part in training sessions for visiting companies in the QI Test Bakery, conferences such as Pizza Expo and the British Society of Baking, Awayday events where I represented Whitworth Bros and our Bakery Team. My journey has been one of continuous learning, increasing responsibility, and strong engagement with both our Technical Team and customers.

What means the most to you about working for the business

What means the most to me is the company’s values, supportive culture, and the opportunity to contribute to real product development that our customers use every day. I really value the trust placed in me, the teamwork within the Bakery Team, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on the business.

What makes you proud to work for us

I am proud to work for Whitworth Bros because we are a respected and innovative business with a strong reputation in the industry. I feel proud when I represent the company at conferences, training sessions, or Awayday events, and when I see products that I have helped to develop being successfully used by our customers.

What is your favourite baked (flour based) food?

My favourite baked, flour-based food is pizza – especially because I am closely involved in pizza-related development projects and really enjoy both working on them and eating the final product. I also like baking cakes for my wife and learning more about baking trends and new product ideas.

Financial Controller

What do you like to do in your spare time

I love decorating my house. I also volunteer as the Treasurer for my daughter’s school PTA.

Tell us about your journey in Whitworth Bros.

I started out as an Accounts Assistant for the group companies in 2006 after graduating from Northampton University (having studied Software Engineering). I started studying with the AAT (alongside working), then moved onto the ACCA. I was working on F&A George Ltd and Whitworths Holdings Ltd initially, gaining accounting experience across multiple areas, until I took a sabbatical in 2010 to go travelling for 8 months. Whilst away I paused my studies for the first few months, but then decided to track down some ACCA books from a college in Kuala Lumpur in order to continue studying alongside my travelling. A little while after my return I moved over to work on the Whitworth Bros Ltd accounts and I finally finished the ACCA in 2013 (meaning I was a qualified accountant). Over time my role and job titles have evolved, to the point of reaching Financial Controller. I’ve worked across all areas of the WBL accounts, including balance sheet, fixed assets, gross margin, operating expenditure, expenses & credit cards, cash book, and I used to have the S/L and P/L teams report into me. As the business has grown over time and the finance team has expanded, the scope of what I cover has naturally narrowed. I now predominantly focus on operating expenditure and the purchase ordering system.

What means the most to you about working for the business

The business has always shown me loyalty and I’ve always felt like a valued member of a large family, rather than just having a “job”.

What makes you proud to work for us

We have such an impressive customer base, the majority of people I know have eaten something containing our flour.

What is your favourite baked (flour based) food?

Well, ironically I have a gluten intolerance… but my daughter loves Warburtons bread!
